How to serve images in next-gen format

Often website designers will review Google PageSpeed Insights, as a valuable tool to gauge website performance, usability, and overall build quality.  A frequent recommendation is to ‘serve images in next-gen format’.  So what is it?

Next-gen image formats, such as WebP allow for images to be compressed without any noticeable loss of image quality.  The benefits of this include smaller file sizes, therefore reducing the amount of time it takes for your page to load or render.  For mobile users, particularly with poor quality signal, this can make the difference between an active or abandoned visitor.

We use Shortpixel for all of our website design projects, due to its ease of use and outstanding value for money.
